ARST @ RSA 2012

Medicine, Health, & Publics

Association for the Rhetoric of Science & Technology (ARST) Preconference
held in conjunction with the biennial conference
of the Rhetoric Society of America (RSA)

The Loews Philadelphia Hotel
Philadelphia, PA, USA
May 24-25, 2012

Conference Theme

Health and medicine occupy increasingly prominent places in public discourse with citizen advocates playing significant roles in developing, engaging, and critiquing biomedical texts and practices. But how exactly have diverse stakeholders used rhetoric to shape the discourses and practices of health and medicine? This preconference will address the multiple ways that publics and the medical establishment mutually influence one another by advancing theory, criticism, and/or practice related to the rhetoric of medicine and its publics. Several papers featured at the preconference will appear in a forthcoming special issue of the Journal of Medical Humanities on “Medicine, Health, and Publics.”

Goals

The primary purposes of preconference are to:

(1)             deepen participants’ understanding of how various stakeholders interface with biomedical research and practice;

(2)             showcase current research related to the preconference theme across communication/English/composition audiences;

(3)            build a network of medical rhetoric researchers across ARST and RSA; and

(4)             workshop papers for a special issue of the Journal of Medical Humanities.

Participants

Participants whose research is featured include rhetoric of medicine researchers from the U.S., U.K., and Canada who represent English, Composition, Linguistics, Communication Studies, and allied disciplines.
